    DIY: Actuated chuck/collet for lathe

    Hi all,

I've spent several hours now looking for a simple affordable off-the-shelf solution for an actuated chuck/collet that can be opened/closed, e.g. via an Arduino (air-powered?), to be used on a lathe-like contraption (actually, a carbon fiber winder). The jaws (3-4) would need to have a range to accommodate parts between 1/4" and 1/2". The parts I will spin are lightweight (plastic, an ounce max), so no need for heavy duty/high precision/high end materials. I have a Sherline with a turntable, so I can make simple adapters if needed. If I had a good design in front of me, I could even settle for a 3D printed part (I have a makerbot).

    Thank you in advance!

Best of luck a simple design for an actuated collet is 90% of an auto tool changer that everyone would be using, might be easier to search for rocking horse poo! I did see someone posted a diy ATC the other day link below

I would have no problem desinging and making a tool picker (some rails, belts, step motors... no rocket science), but a rotary collet is beyond me since it cannot be put together from simple modules, and has to be balanced.

I found this on aliexpress for $400. Not cheap, but might be acceptable. Thing is, it's an overkill for what I want to do:
Standard Two and Four Jaw air pressure Pneumatic Chuck, Lathe Machine Chuck-in Chuck from Industry & Business on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group

Then there is this for $60, but it's probably a misleading title
KM pneumatic / hydraulic cnc lathe chuck 3 jaw-in Chuck from Industry & Business on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group

Yes the tool pickers quite simple the actuated collet is the problem preventing diy or reasonable priced quality ATC.
