OKUMA 700M ALERT 128 Memory Disk Format!

    Hi Everyone,

We have only one OKUMA 700M in our plant. It has been working for 5 or more years.
One year ago memory of the machine became full and an operator opened control block and replaced the battery spontaneously in the memory board.
After that the machine stopped to run properly. When power is on, it is checking (I think so) itself and gives SBP monitor message 80 (128 - Memory Disk Format), even not booting.
I wanted to debug, unfortunately in install mode it shows the same error after install command.
I have released that this message is appearing whether memory board installed or not in control block.
We have tested memory board somehow, and its' hardware part is working properly.

So could anyone give any advise?
    What i have to do?

    Thank you for reading.
    Thank you for advise.
    Regards

There is a specific battery replacement procedure, normally only used by Okuma service personnel.
By removing the battery you have lost all your parameters.
A full system reinstall is now required.
You will need to use your install disks.
Not sure if you will now need the Battery replacement disk or not.
Guess it is time to give it a go on the reinstall method as specified in your manual.

    Good luck.
The process is not difficult, but you do need to follow the instructions in the manual.
Pretty much a case of Start up in Install mode.
Feed in disk 1 through to disk n...
    Restart.
Make sure limit parameters are set as per the data sheet in the electrical cabinet (usually).
Obviously, all tool data will be gone.

Re: OKUMA 700M ALERT 128 Memory Disk Format!

    Thanks a lot.

In section 4 of the maintenance manual there is procedure for installing software.
I have done steps, following instructions:
    1. I turn on NC and switched ON in INSTALL MODE.
    2. Then pressed RESET button.
    3. In the screen appeared [MAIN MANU] with three items: 1.Install 2. Diagnosis, 3. Extend
    4. I entered number 1
Unfortunately, it again showed the same error: 128 Memory disk format.

Maybe I missed something. In control block, red led in MB1 board still lights up.
    What I did wrong?

Tomorrow I will read again and try.
    Regards

Did he hook up the battery backwards? That will fry the memory board.

    Hello Broby,

I did procedure following instructions in manual:
    a) turn on the power supply
    b) set the Install Mode switch to ON (I)
    c) Insert the INSTALL floppy disk (1/n) into the floppy disk drive
*-in my case, there are 9 floppy disks.
    1 - install disk

    d) Press the System Reset button
    * After pushing this button system reseted. System (or boot) is loading from floppy disk.
Then appeared following screen in displey.
    PiXS.ru / ????????? ???????? ??? ?????? / ???? ??????? / ????? ???????

In manual it is recommended choose 0 to install package (disks from 2 to 9).
Whether I chosed 0 or 1 it is displaced error screen.
    PiXS.ru / ????????? ???????? ??? ?????? / ???? ??????? / ????? ???????
    PiXS.ru / ????????? ???????? ??? ?????? / ???? ??????? / ????? ???????

I have no information whether a worker hooked up the battery backwards or not. When we tested it, we could not find any fault in memory board. By the way, my suspicion falls on the memory board.

And in manual I met instructions, procedures with floppy disk "D" several times (for example, The floppy disk "D" method should be used when the flash memory has failed for some reason, or when the OS has not been installed. - Section 4, page 23). But in disk package there was only 10 disks: Package floppies (9 disks) and Backup floppy (1 disk).

    What I should do next?

    Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

Sorry, do not know. Think it might be time to call your nearest Okuma engineer.

You need to initialize the memory; it requires a specific utility disk that your dealer will have. If that doesn't work, then your memory board is bad (highly unlikely since it sounds like everything was fine until you changed the battery.
