A couple episodes ago, I realized I made a mistake in the body which left me with no choice. The angle on the body was way too much - would've made for a 20-25mm tall bridge and I didn't want that ... so the shim lets me correct that. It's actually done very frequently on archtops and semi-hollow guitars.
