    Strange spindle noise LB15

Hi my old green screen LB15 has started make a strange noise in the spindle. I am pretty sure it is coming from the chuck clamping actuator on the end of the spindle. It is most apparent when a part is clamped in the chuck, but comes a goes with spindle revs. At first I thought it was some of the sheet metal vibrating because that's what it sounds like. Has anyone had this before? I've never had this apart but there would have to be some bearings in there somewhere, perhaps they need replacing...any ideas guys. Thanks

[ if bearings, but i guess not ]

how is roundness of rotary movement ? outside diameter radial play ? is it machine still able to cut ?

cut again some parts that you have done before at tight OD tolerance ( <0.01) , and compare this result with that, so with a good reference

if you don't have, consider a diameter d, bearing nominal < d < chuck exterior, and test it here

    - generally, bearings normal wear will decrease outside roundness
    - accidental colisions damages greater your front bearings, so your rear ones can still be functional

[ if other, i guess, becuase there is sound also on static/stationery ]

... clamp a part, at high presure, how does it sounds ?
... reduce presure, how does it sounds ? still the same ?
... turn of machine, with part still gripped, how does it sounds ? ... there is still pressure into hidraulic system
... clamp part / clamp nothing ... any difference here ? put ear/hand near chuck ... put ear/hand near actuator ...
... maybe one of these questions will help you locate the source kindly !

Thanks deadlykitten, I got some time to investigate a bit further today & am pretty confident that it is the 6013 bearings at the rear of the spindle. I will replace them tomorrow & let you know how it went.

you know how they say, it is better to change them all

if machine was exploited normally, than bearings change should keep it going ...

even if bore and ax looks great to human eye, check their cilindricity on area that comes in contact with bearings ... i wish you a minimal intervention
