Aluminum Nitride is a covalently-bonded ceramic material, is synthesized from two basic elements aluminum and nitrogen. It is an important advanced ceramic material. It is stable in an inert atmosphere, and exhibits high thermal conductivity. It is also a very good dielectric. These properties have applications in electronics, optics, and lighting.
Properties of Aluminium Nitride:
1. High thermal conductivity Material
2. Excellent thermal shock resistance
3. Chemically stability
4. Good Thermal expansion coefficient
5. Resistance to corrosion and erosion
6. High electrical resistivity
7. It exhibits a uniform microstructure.
The use of sintering aids and hot pressing is required for the Aluminium Nitride Products formation. Sintering techniques are helpful in the production of dense technical grade ceramic material. AlN is stable at high temperatures and inert atmospheres. A layer of aluminum oxide forms at high temperature. This layer protects the material up to 1370°C of temperature. Above this temperature bulk oxidation occurs.
AlN is stable in hydrogen and carbon dioxide atmospheres. The material dissolves slowly in mineral acids through the grain boundary attack. Its properties of high thermal conductivity with high electrical resistivity are useful for the Machining Ceramic alloys.
Aluminum nitride products hydrolyze extremely slowly in water. Most current uses of this material are in the electronics industry. This material is non-toxic alternative to beryllium Oxide.
