    *NEED HELP* machining pure molybdenum

    afternoon everyone, my boss just informed me that we are going to make a part out of pure moly, We have never machined it here so im looking for any kinds of tips and info you guys might have. will be turnig very narrow grooves of center on the part and i am wondering how the tools will hold up with the interuppted cuts. thank you in advance

    thank you for the reply. I also read both of those and bookmarked them on my pc. Just seeing if maybe someone had found a good insert or any experience with how the material reacts to interrupted cuts. i have a rep coming today will see what he has to say, and post results if there are any.

    I'm a little late to the game but I just cut a bunch of molybdenum.


    It doesn't like high surface footage on the tools.

    The endmills I used were 4 flute 1/4" Flat Endmill - 1750 RPM - 20 IPM feedrate

    Drills and reamers were carbide.

    I drilled a 0.039" diameter hole with 1950RPM and 1.0 IPM.

    It really is like cutting grey cast iron, but slightly worse. The part we completed was 1.5" x 1.5" x 0.5" and most of the tools only last for 3 parts. Carbide drills and reamers last maybe 5 parts.

    You can't use taps from my experience because they wear out too quickly. Thread milling is the best option for tapping.
