    Centurion 5 tapping issues

I have a 1991 Partner 1D mill with a Centurion 5 controller. I've been trying to get it to ridgid tap with no success. I do have the tapping option. I found in other threads that I have to use G88 on this machine for ridgid tapping, although that isn't in the manual, only G84. Any time I use G88 the machine shuts down with an error 200. Using G84 it isn't reversing for some reason. I've tried all kinds of combinations with no luck. There is a G63 code in the book for tapping mode but it isn't in any examples and it doesn't make any difference.
My code looks like this :

    G84 X-5.2439 Y-.492 Z-.225 R.1 F25. G98 doesn't reverse.
    G84 G63...... Doesn't reverse.
    G88 machine stops.
    G88 G63 stops.

Any suggestions what could be wrong or if I'm doing something wrong? I come from Fanuc controls.

    Thanks,

    Mike

I just realized that the VFD has been replaced with a SafeTronics GP-10 drive at some point. I'm wondering/guessing that is why it isn't working correctly?

Are you absolutely certain that your machine has the spindle encoder necessary for the rigid tap cycle to work?
Conversational programming and the G-code list may show the G88 cycle, but not all machines had the encoder installed.
Look under the covers on the head to check for the encoder which will be belted to the spindle.

If it is there, make sure that the belt is in position and the pulley is tight. Also check that the MISC parameter Spindle Encoder PPU is set correctly.

What version is the software in your machine?

It's definitely there. Belt seems ok, but I'll double check it tomorrow and check the parameter.
    1.28.23 is the controller version.

So I think your feed is wrong. When rigid tapping, your feed is relative to spindle rotation. For example, for a 1/4-20 tap, your feed is the pitch, .050". The error is probably because the control knows the machine is not capable of moving at 25" per revolution.

Hi Allen, I tried both feeds to make sure,.025 gives an error that it is out of range.

ZZZZ, you were right! The spindle encoder ppu was at 0.a setting sheet in my manual had it at 2000. I changed it back and it works now! At least in air, going to try metal now.

    Good news, congrats

I would go check all the rest of the parameters as well, if you haven't already done that.

HI there I know this is a really old post, but i have a similar mill with the rigid tap option that used to work fine and now its doing the same thing, i was hoping you could tell me which parameter had the spindle encoders ppu stored in it
