    steel/aluminium fixed gantry build

    Hi.
Joined here a long while back when i started my first build. Got about 80% done then moved and sold off parts.
Now im back with another build which i will finish.
Its a fixed gantry with cut size of 450x450. Some specs are:
10mm braced steel base which has been ground flat.
X axis- 25mm hiwin rails, 15mm nsk ground ballscrew 10mm pitch
Y axis- 15mm star rails, 12mm nsk ground ballscrew, 10mm pitch
Gantry- Sides 19mm steel ground and machined with precision cast angle suports. Gantry beam, 15mm steel ground and machined with rail slots for lining up.
Z axis- linear actuator 200mm travel, 15mm thk rails, 12mm thk ballscrew 5mm pitch, Its aluminium but solid as.
No electrics yet, but will be steppers and geckos i think.
Spindle i have got is a tecknomotor 0.75kw DB model.
Here is a mock up of where i am so far.
    Hope you like
    Barry.

Here's a shot of inside of z axis. Industrial unit, even has remote grease ports.

What do you want to cut with that machine? Seems nice.

Thanks guys. I will be cutting plastics and aluminium, the usual.
Thats why i have decided to build it in steel and get proper machining done so it will be quite rigid.
Also the spindle i have coming has double angular contact bearings and although only 0.75kw it has max power and torque at 12000rpm which will help.
Heres a close up of the gantry parts.

    Bit of an update.
Spindle arrived, very happy i spent a bit extra and got the better model.
Also got an ethernet smooth stepper brand new unopened off ebay for almost half price. Pays to look around.
Been drilling and tapping lots of holes for mounts etc.
Added braces/ribs to back of gantry beam. 15mm x 40mm bright steel. Gantry now pushing 40kg bare and very solid.
Next i'll add some bracing to gantry sides.
    Heres a couple of pics.

Looks like a nice build. How did you get the steel base ground flat - cost? The z-axis assembly looks cool - your own design? Are the slots on the sides for sensors? Do you have any CAD files to share for the z-axis?
    Keep up the good work.
    cheers.

    Hi.
The base i got from a scrap yard for $100.It was an old circuit board loader. Soon as i saw it was a ground top i made an offer.
Then based my build around its size.
The z axis is from ebay. No way i could make something like it.
Yes the slots are for adjustable limit and home switches.

    Re: steel/aluminium fixed gantry build

Time for a bit of an update. While waiting for some parts to be machined i thought i'd start on the electronics.
Found a used control box at a scrap machinery yard that happened to have a nice torridal transformer, Siemans 24v power supply
and various connectors, switches and plenty of wire to use.
So i have made a linear power supply delivering 69 vdc at the caps. for motors. Siemans ps for my BOB. Got a 5vdc ps for the ESS.
    I found a gecko G201x cheap which i'll use for the z and got 2 Leadshine em806's for x and y.
Arranging the components was fun and its a bit tight but i still have room for another Em806 for a future 4th axis,
I have added an E stop button/relay. Relay for limit/home switches.
Heres some pics. when i brought and how it is now.

    Time for an update.
Been waiting to have some parts machined ( big thanks to ozitriton for his help )
Just a mock up for now, still need to drill and tap more holes. But i think its looking good.
