return to zero - not always

I have a Mori Seiki SL-3 with Yasnac LX1 controller. Most of the time it works well. But, sometimes I get an error when it tries to return to zero. The problem is always in the X direction. Rather than the normal green light, I get a positioning alarm. At first I thought it might be a sticky switch, but the tricky part is, the only way I've found to make the problem go away is to completely shut down the machine and bring it up again. No amount of jogging away and running at it again will work. I have to shut down and restart. Your thoughts are appreciated.
