Which stepper motor would you recommend?

    Hi All,

Just need a little help with a choice of stepper motors.

    This is what I have:

A 3 axis stepper motor driver board from Xylotex rated 2.5A/phase @ 35v max.

An unregulated linear power supply 6A @ 28Vdc.

My question is out of the following stepper motors which will give me the greatest usable power? I will be wiring them bipolar parallel for max speed and torque.

    Stepper 1..........3.1V.......2.1 A.......1.48 Ohm......1Nm
    Stepper 2..........5.04V......1.4 A.......3.6 Ohm.......1.24Nm
    Stepper 3..........3.15V......2.1 A.......2 Ohm..........1.24Nm
    Stepper 4..............4V.........2 A.......1.13 Ohm......1.85Nm

I will be setting my driver board to 8 micro steps. I can not get the torque curves for these motors.

Sorry about all the dots in the list I did space them out nicely but when I previewed the post it pushed everything together and was unreadable

Thank you for any help offered,

    Mike

Better still if it were a choice between two stepper motors.

    Stepper 1….. 3V….2.5A/phase………..2 Ohm……………..1.8Nm

    Stepper 2…...3V…..1.25A/phase………2 Ohm……………..0.9Nm

With the Xylotex board I could run stepper 1 at only 2.5A/phase bipolar parallel but they should be run at 5A/phase to gain full torque. So would I be better off running them bipolar series at 2.5A/phase?

Stepper 2 would be 2.5A/phase wired bipolar parallel but I would get the max torque.

So which would be best with the Xylotex board?

With steppers, you only get full torque when they aren't spinning. Bipolar parallel will give you more torque at higher speeds than bipolar parallel. However, torque is proportional to current. So, a 5 amp motor running at 2.5a would give you about half it's torque, which would be the same as you're second motor. Hard to say which would be better without the torque curves, though.

I think with a Xylotex you really want to stick with motors rated at about 2.8amps or less, and the lower the rated voltage the better.
