AC Spindle Motor, Do I need a drive or VFD

Ok so I'm attempting to retrofit a Mori SL1 Lathe.

I've been told to use an AC Spindle Servo 7.5kw.

First off most don't come with drives, when you look at regular servos they are paired with a specific drive. So when looking at a spindle drive they seem to be paired with what looks like a regular, but large, VFD.

So what do I need for this Yaskawa AC Spindle Drive Motor, # EEVA-51KM, 5.5/7.5 kW, Used, Warranty | eBay a VFD or a special drive.

This is of course going to power my spindle. So I also need to know do these have encoders built in?

You don't use a Servo motor unless you want to do spindle Indexing, for milling drilling Etc, and your machine does not have any of these features

What happened to the original Spindle motor the Lathe had???

The Ebay motor don't bother it's to old and is most likely worn out

I do want to index the spindle.

I'm retrofitting the entire machine so it'll have any features Mach 3 has.

Thanks, so don't buy used spindle motors.

yes ,you need a inverter,if you need to change the speed of spindle .

If you want indexing then you will need a Servo motor and it's matching drive, I don't think Mach3 Lathe supports indexing, or C axes operation, it does do threading with a single pulse for synchronizing the spindle for threading, you would need other hardware/software to make it do indexing

Some use a regular AC motor for the spindle drive, and then have a Servo motor to do the indexing

@mactec54, interesting. I hand't thought of it like that.

I don't have and probably won't have live tooling so I don't think I would need indexing, just spindle position for rigid tapping.

So if I don't need indexing then I can just do like I've done before on my other CNC lathes and use a pulse board for rigid tapping and a regular ole' AC motor?

Just out of curiosity what would i need indexing for besides live tooling?

That's what I was wondering when you first said you needed indexing, it can be used though for doing internal keyways and splines

Ah. Cool. So you think I should just go with an indexer card and a regular AC motor?

The best Ac motors are Inverter Duty, some say no, but they are really a lot better than a regular Ac 3Ph motor, Baldor washdown motors are a good one to look at

Interesting. Never heard of inverter duty. I use wash down motors all the time.

As a point of interest, over the years I have Never applied a VFD to anything but a standard (non vector rated) motor, the oldest was a GE motor on 1954 machine.!!
    Never yet had a failure.

You have already been using inverter duty motors then, the wash down motors are and have been inverter duty for many years, they run so much better than a non inverter duty motor

No not many people use a vector rated motor, unless they want max control of the motor, that's a different motor than a inverter duty motor, the vector motor has an encoder, the inverter duty does not

I actually intended Inverter rated, a misspell error.!
