    Re: THE GRIZZ

    Kenny,

When the last screw is screwed and the last wire is wired, I'm going to retire to my easy chair with some good books and a crossword puzzle. Any future changes on that thing will be Nick's bailiwick..and his dough too. It's been fun but I'm ready to be done and move on, although learning how to make stuff with it may pique my interest.

    Thanks for the kind words.

    Hi Stuart,

The machine is coming along fantastic. The fit and finish, the details, everything is just fantastic. You and Nick are certainly on par with some big-time machine tool builders - be proud of what you guys have accomplished!

As for "Alpha Mill" - my interpretation of it was "Alpha" as in Alpha male, the dominate one. I get your concept too about it being your first, mine just has a stronger bite ;-)

You'll get sucked in as there will be something new to learn. One thing I believe that ties everyone around here together is everyone is always looking to expand their knowledge of the subject matter. The work quality you guys are putting into that project is exceptional and I just don't see folks with that kind of work ethic sitting around not doing much.

I would interpret Alpha as in wolves. This is the best custom work I have seen in here that I can recall. You guys are making a top-notch machine and really kind of helped prod me into making something that was much more polished than my first effort. I'm loving watching this machine develop.

Agreed, this thread is very inspirational. My mill is getting torn apart right now for a linear rail conversion, and it'll be getting a new enclosure (i blame you guys for that) while it's down.

I cant tell you how many threads over the years that have inspired me to change something. There used to be a time when I wanted to make things.

Well I sure appreciate all the nice comments. I don't want to seem like I'm soured on the project but it has been costly and it's coming up on a year so it would be nice to be finished and be able to make parts. This was a father-son project with the intention of Nick using the machine to make and sell some type of product, which I hope pans out.

We aren't finished yet but when we do..if we ever do, Nick has planned a "grand reveal" which I'm sure all will enjoy. I have queried him and he told me that this finale will not include Champagne and dancing girls...rats!

Since the reveal hasnt happened yet maybe there is time to change his mind on the dancing girls?

I'll work on Nick but I have some real doubts. I truly don't think the dancing girls are going to want to do their ' thang' in a dirty old shop with an old coot in a greasy shop coat. I'd probably have to take a bath first, and that ain't gonna happen.

Dancing girls are not picky about the dance space if enough money is involved.

LOL.... you beat me. As long as someone pays the bill, the old coot wont be an issue either

Make things..... you mean like..... more things to go on the machine right!

Man, I've almost forgotten why I wanted one in the first place. My second one is it for me, though. There will not be another bigger machine. My small shop building is maxed out.

The trick is to build a shop with a small apartment on a second story..that way when mama kicks you out you'll have a real man-cave to slink off to.

My wife won't allow me to make any new purchases of anything made of cast iron that weighs more than she can lift. When I croak, she is very concerned with all the heavy iron in the shop. I think that's the upside to having male children..I have bred them to be tool junkies, just like me. I've convinced my wife that they will deal with all the heavy iron.

Using the C25S expansion board forces one to come up with some sort of stand-off arrangement. The c25 board uses little push connectors so i decided to try and support the board as best i could... in hopes of the board not snapping in half first flick of the finger. Came up with a model in fusion 360 and printed it in PETG. A hand full of M3....M4? button heads hold the boards to the "mount"... all in all i think it turned out nice! The cards no longer feel flimsy.... and there is a way to mount it.

    Re: THE GRIZZ

All the buttons for inputs got the crimper-jumper-treatment. As well as all the signal wires for said buttons.... its a bit on the "nesty" side...... but then again there is a ton of wires and not so small connectors in a really small space... testing the signal wires with a meter against the "schematic" confirmed everything was where it should be! nice. As far as the HMI goes its pretty much done, the monitor and keyboard are installed, all the wires are pulled awaiting the electronics enclosure on the base...

Fuses.... Originally there where 3 bulk head style fuse holders coming through the front of the enclosure... due to unforeseen space constraints in the area the three fuses where pulled (holes capped) and small section of din was installed to mount a few fuse blocks in a "better" location....

Oh yeah..... HAPPY FRICKIN 50K views batman! Hell yeah, the grizz... I mean alpha mill says... "thats whats up!"

(bottom right side of enclosure, 3 empty fuse holder holes)

(3 new din fuse holders )

    (wires pulled awaiting lift off)

(launch button... do NOT! even think about pressing it...)

    (as it lies....)

    Re: THE GRIZZ

Had a fun weekend in the shop. Alex (a brother) stopped by and hung out, while drinking a beer he twizzled up a 25" ethernet cable to make the run from the ESS to the NUC....
Connected the drive to a laptop via Hitachi's pro-drive next software and poked around in preparation for setting it up final time around.
Having a dad that has been building cool machines for 30 years has many perks... on very small one being a nice variety of "industrial-centric" stickers / badges on hand...
The electronics enclosure is hung and bolted to the machine... pulling wires to the box, making up a few ends, labeled a few things, zip ties....some rather "chrome" looking hole plugs...
Put some juice to the box and and tested the control power relay all the power supplies, fan... everything but the ESS side of things... push the button, click, red light.... fans come on and leds start to blink!!! yeeee its alive! Very satisfying to say the least! Thanks paw, you know what them' wires do to my "medulla oblongata" !!!
    Getting closer.....
