    Bent screws or something else?

    Hello all,

I am getting a crazy amount of deflection on my y axis movement. I am running two ball screws setup on the outside of the table to move the gantry (8 ft). I think that the screws are bent but before I replace them I want to make sure it's not something that the machine will just do again. I have been reading up on the importance of ballscrew end fixity and it appears that my current setup is almost the least ideal. I have attached pictures of it. It appears that both ends are supported and not fixed. Can someone tell me if that is correct or am I missing something?

    Thanks!

You have to have at least one end of the ballscrew fixed or you will have axial movement in the assembly, not good. The most common way is to fix and preload the motor end and allow the other end to float in the support bearing housing. I have seen both ends being fixed where the ball screw is placed in tension and preloaded between the support bearings.
