Excello 602 (605) z axis gearbox oil + main gearbox gaskets

My Excello came from the factory with a gearbox for the z axis (which looks the same as on 605's that i have seen pictures of.) None of the manuals that I have mention anything about what lubrication to use. Should I use transmission fluid like they recommend for the spindle gearbox or some other kind of oil?

Also, has anyone changed out the gaskets on the main gearbox? I have some minor dripping of transmission fluid and would like to fix it if it's not too much trouble.

Did you ever figure this out? I'm in the same boat. My XLO 602 came to me with grease in the gear box, it all just sits at the bottom of the box. I don't see a fill hole for oil though, which makes me wonder if grease isn't correct.

I own'd twp XLO 602's and when I contacted the factory parts on the question they told me that the rated oil shown in the manual had since been changed been to Transmission fluid.

I see rated oil for the high/low gearing and for the X-AXIS transmission. I thought you were discussing the z-axis (quill power feed), which is not listed in any of the documentation I have.

Mine has a cup on the left side that I always thought fed that area. I’ve always just put way oil in it.

That cup is not for spindle oil that I know.

Mine has the spindle 2 speed G.B.
This is the ref I made for T.F.

Gotcha, mine as well, for the spindle lubrication. Again, I thought that you were referring to the gearbox for the z-axis of the head. When I read this I took it to mean the gear box that drives the power feed for the quill. Not the lubrication. Of the quill, not the high/low gear box for the spindle speed, but the gear box that is accessed through the back of the head that drives.the spindle down during boring operations.

The leak in mine ended up being from the z axis which has transmission fluid in it. I still have not taken it apart to try and fix it.

BTW, my Excello (which is marked as a 602 but is a lot different than others i have seen) has a completely different z axis than most of them i have seen. It came from the factory with ball screws and the head only tilts in one axis.

Still not sure we're talking about the same thing, but if we are then my z is filled with grease. It doesn't have a fill hole like the head gears.

You should post a picture. Mine also has a ballscrew but it was a spindle wizard conversion.
