    .DXF files open as .TXT

The last hand full of times I have tried to open .dxf files from this site, they load to my computer as .txt files. Is it because they are being drawn in a newer version of AutoCad? I have 2005, and I know when my co-worker tries to give me 2016 files, they don't work.Do I just need to update?

Most .dxf files are just text files. If they are being saved with a .txt extension, then it's the way you are saving them. If you just rename the extension to .dxf, then they should open fine in AutoCAD, unless they are saved as .dxf version newer than 2005. I'm running ACA 2018, and there are .dxf versions 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2018. You won't be able to open those.

Yep - mod is correct. Check your default 'save as' or 'do this with file type X' settings if not getting prompted. If nothing works and you're hobbiest or small business under 100k in sales - might want to check out Fusion 360. Pretty nice, not perfect but it is current and price ($0 if meet criteria) is hard to beat.
