Taig 2019CR ER16 CNC Mill Motor Intermittent Start Up Issue

I have about a 10 year old Taig 2019CR ER16 CNC Mill that I use for engraving text. After running it a while yesterday, the motor stopped and started intermittently. I tapped on the housing and the motor started up and ran for about an hour, then finally stopped again and would not come back on. This morning it came back on without issue. I know startup capacitors and relays go bad. Is anyone familiar with this issue?

Capacitors give the motor a boost on startup, but aren't necessary for the motor to continue running. Relays turn it on and off, but I doubt a bad relay would cause it to run intermittently. I'd suspect a loose wiring connection first off, but if that's not the problem, you might have worn something out in the motor over all those years.

I would check the power cable to your motor.
The combination of vibration, weight of the cable, and the movement of the cable, can cause the wires to break as it enters the motor!!
This why I put a strain relief on my power cable...

Also, since it has thermal protection, check it for excessive heat. How? I'd touch it. Maybe some other Taig owners can give you a hint of how hot they usually get.
    Hope this helps.

I powered the motor this morning and wiggled the power cable and it remained running. The power cable is also under no strain.
I am thinking it could be thermal related. I ran the unit way more than usual the day it failed and it may of over-heated.

    sclelectronics,

I think you may be correct. Today I decided to power up the Taig and the motor would not start. I began to barely move the power cable and it powered up.

The following video is about as exciting as watching paint dry, but it clearly looks like a loose connection or cold solder joint may be the culprit inside the motor housing.

    Glad you isolated your problem...
In my motor, the power cord is not soldered!!
They use wirenuts, then they are wiretied to the windings.

So I think at least one of the wires in the power cable broke at the strain relief grommet....
I have seen this many time in different machines.
The cause is high vibration combined with the weight of the cord.
All this stress is then focused where the power cable enters the motor housing..

    hth,
    Stuart
