Looking for Tips and Advice for Milling Wood

Hi there! We just purchased a 7-Axis Robot and want to start experimenting with milling different types of materials. We've already started playing with foam, but want to move on to milling wood next. We haven't tackled this kind of project yet, so I was hoping you all might let me pick your brain...

    - What are the methods / ways for milling wood sculptures? Wood pieces (tables, doors, frames, etc.)
    - What are the best tools to use? What are the different types? What's best for roughing vs. finishing vs. detailing?
    - What are the different types of router bits used for? Who makes the best ones? What do you look for when buying them?
    - How do we reach hard to get to areas?
    - Whats the benefit of cutting up vs. cutting down?
    - What are some overall best practices / lessons learned to master wood milling?

I really appreciate any tips that you might have for us.

    Thanks again!

Re: Looking for Tips and Advice for Milling Wood

What brand of robot is it and what is the 7th axis, a track or rotary table or other?
What cam software are you using?
What type of timber do you mainly intend to mill?
A lot of your questions will be dependant on the individual job you're running, so specifics might make it easier to answer...

Someone could write a whole book answering all those questions. Why don't you give us a break and ask one at a time? With a 7-axis machine, there shouldn't really be any areas that you can't reach; that's why people put up with the complexity of a machine like that. Can you show us some pictures of the foam parts you've made already?
