Having been put right on the UHU servo controller, I need a cheap-ish means of converting step/dir pulses to +/-10 to control some analogue AC servo drives.

The viper2linear looks cool. But..
if you have a 3 axis machine - you are going to spend about $270.
With linuxcnc and mesa hardware - you get true closed loop 6 axis analog control plus 48 i/o and expandable. $280 (comes in ethernet, pci or pcie)

Thanks Sam. Yes, the Viper is not economical for the problem I'm trying to solve - it would be better to buy used step/dir drivers. I'm seriously considering the LCNC/Mesa route, but compared to Mach3, LCNC seems like learning Mandarin compared to learning Spanish! One advantage of LCNC is that the Mesa boards are easily available in Europe.
It looks like the YAPSC project has extinguished itself, with no boards currently being made - shame.

No problem. if you think $89 per axis on a CNC machine s "not economical " to save your servodrive ..omg
( btw..I make about $40 profit on one on those.. not counting the couple hours of work to build and test it and the 1000's of hours to develop it and write the code, and tuning program. )

I understand the difficulty of making a living at a bench too well! If I was trying to run servos that were integral to the machine I'd very much agree $89 per axis is nothing. However, my situation is that I've acquired some servo drives very cheaply without realising they are analogue, so it's only worth bothering with them if I can do it on the cheap - by the time your converters end get posted to the UK and then get clobbered for taxes etc I can get replacement drives for not much more and sell off the analogue ones.
