steps/mm seems really high and steppers get hot.

Im getting my lathe dialed in. When I was setting up the lathe getting the steps dialed in to get my z to read correct my steps have to be 10275 and my x is 12795, this may be acceptable but it just seems really high compared to what other ones I see. The other thing is the steppers seem to get really hot when just sitting idle. I'm sure there is some setting Im missing in mach 3 or i got the wrong type of steppers.

These are the ones I'm running: https://www.automationtechnologiesin...23h2100-35-4a/

If you're using micro-stepping and inches, then those values are probably correct. No matter what the steps per unit are, that shouldn't affect the heating of the motor at rest. Steppers often run fairly hot (uncomfortable to touch), but if yours are really smoking you might need current-limiting resistors at the drives to keep them down to the rated 3.5 amps.

What drives are you using, and at what voltage? Do you have the current set correctly?

How would I know if its set to micro step would that be a setting in mach 3

I'm using geckos g540, I don't currently have any current limiting resisters in im still trying to locate some 3500 ohm units

That's why the motors are getting hot.

The G540 is fixed at 1/10 microstepping.

Ok that makes sense then why I was trying the math and it was only moving .250 before. I ordered some resistors today, it will be Wednesday before I'm back at the shop to put them in. Thank you both for the insight.
