Just as an update... I am highly considering pulling my z axis and doing a refresh. I had a bit of an accident (tossed a part via a facemill) and I now have a bit of a tick in my spindle at higher rpms. I was running it a bit and I think my axis are a bit louder than your guys. I got some estimates on rebuilding the ballscrews and they were in the $1-2k each range. I might just try to do end bearings because I have noise but no real backlash.

You might post a new thread, so that MACTEC chimes in. I seem to remember his concern about ball screw alignment on the Z axis.
Sounds like its going to be quite a job. Keep us posted on your progress.
Take pics and video if you can for the rest of us in case we have to "cross that bridge"

My X axis was noisy but no backlash before I replaced the bearings. The ball screw is easy to tear down, clean and reassemble yourself. However if you are fitting new balls I could see the cost paying someone $1000 or so being justifiable.

Who did your ballscrew service and what did they do to it and why did you send it in?

The wiper on the end of the nut was broken. They replaced the wiper and installed larger balls to take out backlash.

I sent the screw to Rand Industries, a part of Rockford ball screw.

I do not remember why I was looking around in there when I found the broken wiper. I also found the oil distribution block was corroded baldy. I replaced the block and the meters while I had it apart.

Hi, I know its been a while since the last post but I'm having a similar noise along my Y axes and was wondering how hard was it to change out the thrust bearings? Do you have to fully remove the shaft or can you just slide the bearings off?

If I remember correctly you're going to have to at least Slide the screw out far enough to get the bearings off the end.

Bearings are not pressed. Not sure about indicating it
