Hi Guys, I am new to this as well as CNC. I "try" to do woodworking, mostly signs, plaques, and a speed loader. I am trying to make my wife a cutting board like one I saw on you-tube. It is the American flag. I drew out the stars, spaced, and aligned. Now I am having trouble finding a program that will allow me to cut them out, and then cut out separate stars to fill in with. I am cutting purpleheart and wanting to fill in with maple. Every program I choose shows me the cut star, but not enough room to place Maple star inside. I would appreciate any help with this. I have a CNC Shark HD Pro, and using V-Carve 8.5 software. Sorry to be so new and unfamiliar with this to bother y'all, but I would like a suggestion if any ideas. Thanks in advance guys, and Thanks for allowing me the chance to join and learn for the forum.

    Thanks Again,
    Frank

Frank, you have had a lot of views but no answers. Your questions are a bit confusing. Do you mean the the star pockets are too small to be able to insert an inlay?

No Sir, I am trying to find out what program or programs to use on V-Carve Pro. When I put in a program and calculate, it looks as if I am not getting a cut "out' star to fill in with another star ( or inlay ) When I use the inlay program, my stars come out as a circle only,(female) and the male comes out as stars. I am not sure if this is just what this particular program shows, or if that is what it is really going to do. So maybe I need another choice to try. The best I have found yet is the v-carve for cut out and the male portion of inlay to cut fill in's. I hope that explains it better. I am using purpleheart that is 61/4" x 41/2", so the best I can do to get 50 stars is 1/4". I apologize for explaining it this way, but I am fairly new at woodworking so I don't know the correct terminology, and very new at cnc work so I am pretty much lost here. What I have learned is by trial and error, but I am having a blast learning. Thank You Mr. Dawson, I appreciate your help. Maybe the stars are too small for this to work, and I just couldn't see that. If you have any suggestions on this, I'd appreciate them.

    Thank You Sir

Ahhh, OK, I think I understand. Just as an experiment, try putting in a tool diameter of 0.001 and see if you get stars rather than circles.

Okay, I'll see if I can find one, the bit I mean. Thank You Mr. Dawson, I appreciate the help sir. Oh, am I on the right track as far as the V-care for stars and the male inlay for the fillers? Thank You Sir, I appreciate the help.

I wasn't suggesting that you actually try to use a 0.001 inch tool bit. But rather put that tool size into the V-carve and see if the tool path is displayed as a star. For a feature that small you may need to use an actual 0.005 tip taper bit to be able to cut the sharp points of the star.

    VCarve should work fine.

I normally buy my small bits from these guys https://bitsbits.com/index.php?main_...roducts_id=535

What size stars are you making and what type of bit are you using? It would help if you upload the file for evaluation. VCarve has a great tutorial on inlays with the vcarve bits. They will make crisp corners. if you are trying to use end mill bits it will be very hard unless you use a very small one. Here is a video of the inlay process.

Sorry Sir, I was not ignoring you, just completed a plant shutdown and hadn't noticed you responded to my question. So, the stars I am going to try will be 1/4 inch outside radius. I am trying to make a cutting board like the U.S.Flag, and need to get all 50 stars. I was having trouble with the inlay toolpath, and even tried the prismatic toolpath without good results. I am waiting on new bits now to try again, two of these are actually knives. I do want the sharp points, but haven't been able to cut them with what I have, so maybe the new ones will help. I am very new at CNC, so any suggestions you may have will certainly help, and will be appreciated. I did not grow up in the computer age generation, so I am very handicapped, but trying to work my way through it. I watched a video of a guy from MTM making this, but couldn't tell what bits were used, so I am trial and error. I have kept you long enough, so again I thank you for the response, I wish Vectric had a video on how to cut stars, that would help a lot, they have them on almost everything else. Thanks again Sir, I appreciate the help and suggestion.
