In a 3-axis machine, all three ares are controlled simultaneously.
In a 2.5-axis machine, simultaneous control is not possible. XY motion can be given at different Z levels. While Z is changing, XY cannot be changed. Since it is neither 2-axis nor 3-axis machine, it is called 2.5-axis machine.
