Re: Are Twin spindle Twin turret lathes as complex as they look?

hello again, there is a cheaper solution : use collets as attached

    they are designed :
... to achieve tool clamp position repetability
... to block tool sliding and tool rotating

    downsides :
... if torque is high, even if tool won't rotate or slide inside the collet, the collet may rotate inside the chuck
... you can not put the tool in a different position:
...... drag out, like to cut a deeper hole, etc,
...... drag in, to achieve small clearance between flutes and collet face, especially for short rough endmills
......... * unless you regrind the weldon shank at a different position

so far, i have found this design only for er32 / kindly

Thanks deadlykitten, that is exactly what I would be looking for but the problem is it is only offered in ER 32. That is my problem with all the different tooling solutions. Everything seems to skip over ER 25.

hey jmk, i have used such collets a while ago, and onestly i forgot about them

try to look for such an item at the supliers arround your area; maybe someone has something

if not, there may still be a solution :
... craft a part, like a collet, without grooves, from a hard material
    ... drill them on side
... take this part to the edm wire and cut the grooves how you like
... when you insert the tool shank, use also a bearing ball, or some kind of an insert, that will block the tool from slipping out; this element has to be softer then the collet, otherwise it may deform the collet

about modifing the arbor of the live holder, there may be a solution to take it apart, send the arbor at a shop with veterans ( so someone outthere should know how to craft it; such an item is not complicated for somepersons that may be working in a local shop; my point is that you don't need to contact a specialized brand )

    kindly

    and there is the secuRgrip, from Rego-fix, for er32 & 40 :

    ... https://ro.rego-fix.com/en/products/...grip?system=ER
    * attached

i knew about this a while ago, but i forgot yup, like you said, nothing for er25 / kindly

Re: Are Twin spindle Twin turret lathes as complex as they look?

I appreciate the suggestions. I have gone through Rego's stuff and Haimer's stuff. Everyone just skips over ER 25. What we have done before is taken indexable insert mills and welded the collet to them but when you get in the range below indexable stuff say 5/8" and below indexable no longer becomes an option. Now a Er 25 collet may hold a 3/8" endmill ok, when your are around 1/2" you can not run those end mills at the appropriate parameters suggested without slipping and pulling out. I believe we may just have to buy separate live holders in ER 32 or 40.

if you use endmills with tilted flutes, cutting conventional, then the cutting force tends to drag the tool out of the collet

if you would use them climbing, then you will achieve a smoother cutting

generally speaking, roughing may be done conventional, and finishing may be done climbing

if you have small collets, try going only climbing, and see what happens; climbing is for low ae, thus for low radial cutting; who knows, maybe on some operations, you will reduce the slipping effect, thus the tool will stay longer inside the collet ? just saying

when using climb milling, even if the tool would be clamped very good, be carefull at the play between the live holder and the chuck of the live axis; if this play is big, you may reduce the life of the tool, especially when the phase of the arbor of the live holder will go in front of the phase of the chuck of the live axis, and slow down, then back in front, etc ... thus the motor will output a continuous movement, and this continuous movement will be the input into the live holder, but, because of the play, you won't achieve a continuous movement at the tool, but a discontinuous one, when the tool rpm will raise and lower arround the value output by the motor ... such things do not happen on mills, because the transmision chain is more rigid in other words, a mill with direct transmision is more reliable for climb milling, compared to a lathe with live tools / kindly

yup ; if i was arround you, i could help you with such stuff, like give me the holder, here, take it back modified
