Toronto - Fusion 360 Beginner Help

    Hello!

I keep trying to wrap my head around Fusion and have watched a lot of YouTube videos, but since I'm not using the app on a daily basis I find the learning curve quite steep. Wondering if there's any Fusion proficient folk that would be willing to sit with me and tutor? Preferably in the Toronto / Mississauga area.

Please leave me a PM here if interested.

    Thanks!

azurgrip, I was just wondering what way you were using Fusion 360 for? Both Cad & Cam?
The reason I am asking is because I too have been looking at using Fusion 360 for a VMC.
I was going to follow your thread to see what kind of response you receive or maybe you could report back with any updates.

    Thanks,
    Dave

I'm using it for mostly CAD to send to my machinist. But also with the hopes of using the CAM side if I ever get around to converting my G0704 (that's a whole other ball of wax...).

Well if you are in Mississauga I am about 1 hr. west of you and 20mins. south of Brantford.
My address is Scotland Ont. but I am out in the country.
I have a Milltronics VMC that I am programming by finger at the control, gets old fast. Was looking at Fusion 360 for both the CAD&CAM.
If history is any indication I have a feeling I will be in the same boat as you as far as learning new tricks.
I have manual machines, and my mentor was a retired machinist.........but he has no CNC experience what so ever.

May I ask what you're making these days? It's a nice drive that way!

Re: Toronto - Fusion 360 Beginner Help

I am not doing anything special, basically spending more time trying to learn how to use the machine than anything else.
That is one of the reasons why I was interested in using Fusion 360. Kinda of wanting to expand my horizons.

I can say that this part of the country is a lot more laid back than where you are, and I say that from experience, having worked in Mississauga and Etobicoke at one time.
Last week I had to go to Mississauga to pick up some parts, and I soon remembered how much I despise driving on the QEW.

I take it that you may have a business of some sort and thus your reason for doing CAD drawings?
Have you used any other software to help with your drawing?

Re: Toronto - Fusion 360 Beginner Help

    Hi guys,
I am no where near you but am also a newbee to Fusion 360. I struggled to get the basics but then ran across a couple of YouTube sites that have helped me immensely.
The first is Paul McWhorter who is a teacher out in New Mexico I think. Anyhow he has done an excellent series on getting Fusion 360 up and running. While most is geared towards 3D printing, but basics are the same and he is an excellent teacher.

The other one that I enjoy on YouTube is Lars Christensen who does a live stream most work days at 3PM and on Wed. evenings at about 8PM eastern time, he has a Facebook live stream that is dedicated to beginners and will stop and answer questions submitted. These broadcasts are then posted up on YouTube usually over the following weekend.

I am not sure of the Facebook url, as I don't use it, but he mentions it in his videos.

    Hope this may help you.

Thanks for the tip. I've watch Lars a bunch, and also follow him on Facebook. I've had issues with his stuff as there's certain assumptions made about knowing all the terminology which might not be as obvious to us newbies.

    I'll check out Paul!

    @azurgrip,
you have to watch all of Lars works from the very beginning. Not easy considering the number of videos he has produced (~200) of course but you best get on it right away, no time to waste. Discard what is not prudent /applicable. At least you might bookmark some essential stuff to review again in more detail.
Paul McWhorter has done exactly 13 videos on Fusion and they are of little scope IMHO.
A good portion of it is directed at the beginner. Then you can email him to address a specific matter but he is very backed up in that regard.
It is not apparent from the title what exactly you will learn in any given title / upload. I have gleaned essential material for my application and workflow from a wide array of titles. Mind you it is taking a very long time that I really don't have, hey it's all free! But I will say that I have along the journey learned skills that generated output directly from my 3D printer in less than 40min from sitting down to the laptop with a blank slate :-)
And then you must get current with his pronunciations, (he from Denmark) :-)
He was saying origin with a hard "g" as in 'gear' Was driving me nuts, but I got over it. He has come a long way in trying to assimilate the language, and I must give the man credit considering if I was wearing his shoes.

I originally took up fusion to correctly depict the 4' x 6' (effective) CNC Router I am building so that I can achieve some currency and ask for help with my design right here at CNC Zone, and in so doing I have gradually learned many skills. I started with the 500lb steel tube base I had already constructed on a shoestring budget. The rest will be in extruded aluminum profile.
I just found out by the way that these cad representations of the extrusion
Of course, the timeline to get a thread here has become quite protracted and is now measured in fractions of a year ++.
But I will be damned if my quest for input will go stale because I don't have supporting CAD and some glossy images of what I have already achieved!

As for Fusion360, it is all about repetition. You will be stumped and frustrated and then all at once elated when you succeed. Those feelings will be fleeting as you move to the next stumbling block. Eventually you will see the milestones.
This is coming from a guy who is 62 and learning it all from scratch, machining, welding, designing and eventually my own production sized CNC, hopefully before I die.
Autodesk forums are an avenue to find a specific process, but I have not employed it as I assume it is quite busy. And there you will have to be careful as to how you pose the question to get any attention.

Wishing you quick studies or the mentor you seek.

    Hi Dave,

A year on, did you manage to tame Fusion 360? I tried to get my head around it last year and failed but now I am ready to try it again. I downloaded an 'Online Course App' called Udemy and took a couple of classes, it was very slow progress but I did manage to get some basics. I am ready to try again so wondering if you made any progress? Cheers!

Re: Toronto - Fusion 360 Beginner Help

AVSJACK - Well... long story short - No.... I haven't had the time to sit and watch. I have been keeping Fusion up to date by firing her up every month, but haven't been able to sit and digest. I did sign up with an hour long intro course through the local library system but it ended up conflicting with a couple other appointments and had to miss it. I will keep checking the library site to see if another comes up. I have also toyed with the idea of going down to John Saunder's course in Ohio, but I can't see myself being able to get away for any period of time till next year. I've also toyed with the idea of storming down to AutoDesk's new building in downtown Toronto but I try to avoid the core as much as possible.

I've heard of Udemy. I'll take a look at that. You found it slow going? How far can the course take you?

I don't have a CNC'd machine so all my work has been done manually. I do check here as much as I can during the course of the week.

Thanks for checking in and keeping my butt kicked
