    Question Removing depth setting rings

I need to remove the depth setting rings from some carbide 3mm shank mills/drills.
I have done this with a vice set slightly wider than 3mm and a hammer but it is very easy to break them like this.

Does anyone know of a safer way of doing this or a sensibly priced (hobby, not commercial) machine which can do this.

    Thanks.

    Re: Removing depth setting rings

    Sure.
You will need a block of softwood, some cotton wool, a length of (say) 4 mm ID tubing, a length of 3 mm steel rod, and a drill press.
Drill hole on wood block to take the tube snugly.
Put plug of cotton wool in end of tube (soft landings).
    Socket tube into wood block.
Put steel rod in chuck in drill press - against the back wall of the chuck.
Place carbide drill or whatever into tube and place under steel rod in drill press.
Use steady controlled force on the drill press to press the carbide out of the ring.

After all, how do you think 'they' got the ring ONTO the carbide shank in the first place?

    Cheers
    Roger
PS: make sure the tube is long enough!

A drill press - brilliant. Mind you I have only a little lever operated one so I don't know whether it will be strong enough but It might well be. I already have suitable tube and rod so that is my task for today.

    Many thanks.
