    Which Fadal? 4020 1992 with 4th Axis or 4020 1998?

I'm looking at two Fadals they both look like they're in great shape. Haven't seen them in person, but assuming they are both solid which one would you rather have?

One is a 1992 4020 with 4th axis, not just the controller but a 4th axis already installed.

The other one is a 1998 4020. Not sure if it has other boards in there for a 4th axis or not.

    Opinions?

the 92 will be a DC machine which is super easy for repairs, but it may a pathetic control, we have been fine with our -4 after upgrading to max memory (422kb) and a Calmotion..You would likely want to upgrade it to at least a -5 though. The 4th axis is a great feature, however the Fadal method of controlling it can be a nightmare to program (or very expensive to have a post made). It is not the Fanuc standard. Very easy to insert hand code for 4th axis positional.
I personally prefer the boxway machine when going Fadal and would check that.
I would also be checking what spindle drive (I wouldnt want a 6 belt) and RPM for comparison and does either have the 28" extended Z?
Rigid tapping feature would also be high on my list of must haves
If you are a production guy, the 98 should have twice as fast rapids

My personal Favorite is the 4020A or the 5020A High column (28") Linear X and Y , bow way Z. The X and Y are Linear. NO Turcite and the machine will be as Square and table flatness will be as when it left the factory. And no gibbs, straps or turcite to worry about, and with the Single cogged Wye/Delta spindle drive (no hi-lo) you get fantastic finishes. We (Index Designs maker of Rotary tables for Old and New Fadal) have 9 Fadals. Some of them have the 527F control and that is a great upgrade. Either way Fadals are very easy to work on and repair. Good - luck
