Hi everyone,

I see a lot of people are requesting the same help as I am. I have built a machine and I am not sure what motor setup to go with. I know I need NEMA 23's but I am not sure what to buy exactly. I am running Mach3 so I know it has to be parallel port. Below is my machine and the three options I am looking at. Keep in mind, money is definitely a concern.

the motors in the first 2 kits have a high inductance (9mH)
run of a 36V power supply your machine is going to be very slow

the router parts kit says the motors are low inductance
but does not specify what the motors inductance is !!!

when run from a 48V supply ,
a motor of 3mH or less is what I would be looking for

Everything john said is 100% correct. However, since you said nothing about speed, and DID say you needed to save money, why not scavenge or salvage motors? There is a list of motors and where you can find them at:

I typically advise against trusting anything that is direct shipped from China. It's better if a US vendor is standing behind the product.

Hi John. So you are saying I should just save more and get the kit from CNC Router Parts? That was kind f what I thought, but I also thought there might be a cheaper place to get the same or equivalent. The price they want seems a bit high. No?

James Newton: I am not SO hard up for money that I need to scavenge motors. I would rather buy it in a ready to go kit though.

out of the three kits your looking at the router parts kit wins on two important factors
the stepper motors have 1/3 of the inductance compared with the other kits (3mH v 9mH)
and the power supply voltage is higher (48V v 36V )

both factors will enable the router parts kit to step the motors faster
the faster you want the motors to turn the shorter time you have for the current to reach the required current

the higher the inductance the longer it takes for the current to build up to the set current by the drivers DIP switches
higher voltage will also shorten the time it takes for the current to build up

that's why the stepper drivers power supply voltage is several times the rated voltage for the motor !!!!

the chopping action of the stepper driver and the motors inductance controls the motor current
( its not just the supply voltage divided by the motor coil resistance !! )

I guess its the Leadshine MX3660 3-Axis Digital Stepper Motor Driver that adds a lot to the cost of the router parts kit
but like the Gecko G540 saves on the interconnecting wiring between the breakout board and the stepper drivers

if you can find a kit like the amazon kits but with stepper motors with 3mh inductance
it could give you less expensive start
with the option of upgrading to a 48v power supply if you need a little more speed

Thanks John. I think I will just save a bit more and get the one from CNC router parts. It's pretty much a plug and go system and obviously decent quality. Thanks for you r help, I appreciate it.
