    load inertia measurement

I have read here (and other places) about the importance of the ratio between the load and motor inertia being 10:1 or less. The motor inertia can be found in the manufacturer specs for the particular motor, but how do I measure experimentally the inertia of the linear system that I want to drive with the motor?

Also, how can the inertia be calculated for a theoretical setup? Are there any books that explain these sort of machine design calculations that are accessible to people without a degree in mechanical engineering?

Any help would be a appreciated.
