I am thinking of adding encoders to my xylotex set up using rogers interface board....what encoder do I need and were to get it...and has anyone done this yet?
Thanks,
Jim

US Digital has inexpensive encoders that will likely fit your motors. Take a look through their web site.

Are you losing steps now?
Are you afraid of losing steps?
Are you scraping work because of lost steps?
If you are losing steps it's better to address the cause even if you do decide to go with the position "monitor" system you listed.
All the encoders will do is shut the machine down if the position error is greater than a preset value.
With steppers they lose postion because they have been asked to do something they can't (outside the torque envelope of the motor) so there is nothing you can go in a closed loop system but slow the motor down to bring it back inside it's torque curve. Simply adding in more steps (which is not what the Rogers Board does) just results in adding insult to injury.
USDIgital E4 series with sticky adhesive works on most motors that have a rear shaft. You will need to get the centering tool they sell to install them and
make sure you get the tiny connector with the wires attached for the encoder or you will find it impossible to hook them up (:-(
