    Spindle motor Question

Just wondering if anyone has used a cnc spindle motor and set it up for manual control.

I have an application that I would like to use one in. I'd like to be able to set the speed, then just turn it on and off when needed. (mounting it in a 1920s manual lathe apron)

I have used router motors in the past for things like this, but something a bit quieter and with more versatility with an ER20 collet set would be much better in my opinion.

    Thanks

No reason you couldn't do this. You can easily manually control a VFD from the keypad (normally the default settings) or wire it for remote operation from a pushbutton station. Then it's just a matter of choosing the spindle/VFD that you want.

    Re: Spindle motor Question

Fair enough. I've used VFDs on other equipment when necessary, but am not thrilled about it. I'll do it if needed, but would prefer to go with a slightly more self contained unit.

Are there 110v, 220v single phase spindle motors out there or even DC? Nothing seemed to pop out in my searches, although I just started looking.

I'm not aware of a fully self contained unit with the exception of router motors. I assume you need router speeds?

    Yes,

Router speeds would be good. can likely go as low as approximately 17,000 rpm., but 25-30k rpm would be better.

This is the Lathe I plan on mounting it in.

Nice old lathe. Quite a gearbox system on the spindle drive.

I think you are going to be stuck with a router motor (I like the 75182 Porter Cable) or a VFD/spindle combo for what you want to do.
