    KBIC DC Motor Speed Controller

    The attached picture indicates a schematic from Al the Man who did it to help me back in 2012 to connect a Sherline 90VDC motor with a KBIC controller and all went fine at that time.

    I have the same Sherline 90VDC motor with the same KBIC controller which now I try to connect for a new Taig lathe I bought. Since for now I just want a simple ON/OFF control I follow the schematic but I don’t connect the white and orange wiring from the motor which are going to the relay. I just connect the red, black, green from the motor to KBIC and the AC power white to L1 and black to the switch inside the KBIC. The motor white and orange are tapped off as per schematic

    I also want to control the speed with the knob on the KBIC.

    When I turn the KBIC switch to ON I just hear a humming noise and the motor doesn’t turn

    What I do wrong?

    I had to do some searching to jog my memory, IIRC the white - orange pair are the thermal switch, so it should run without it.
    Have you proven the motor is OK by running it on an automotive battery for example?
    Did you connect the speed control correctly ?

    Thanks Al

    The humming noise comes from the KBIC box so I suspect the problem is in there

    My car battery is kind of difficult to access, got to find another way

    Connecting speed control correctly? How do I check that?

    BTW the orange and white wires inside the KBIC are not connected to anything

    The orange - white are just a thermal sensor to detect overheating.
    You could wire a lamp in place of the motor and see if you go from off gradually up to full brilliance.

    I wired a 12.8VDC, 1.3A transformer to the motor and it turns

    I wired a lamp to the KBIC and the light goes up/down with the knob

    Again from the motor I connect black, red and ground to KBIC and from AC power the white to L1 and the black to the switch on KBIC, is simple but doesn’t work

    Any more ideas?

    So you have the AC in going to L1 & L2 ?
    Measure the resistance from the motor black and motor red to the Ground lead.
    I assume the KBIC did not hum with the lamp test?

    Yes the AC black is going to the one side of the switch and the other side of the same switch goes to L2.

    Correct, the KBIC didn’t hum with the light bulb

    Something I thought Al. The KBIC / Motor was used before by another guy and he replaced them with a VFD and afterwards he gave me the KBIC / Motor since he has no use for them. I’m thinking he may have palyed with the potentiometer and the settings may have change and that’s why I hear a hum from the KBIC. The manual says to check the voltage between P1 and P3. What voltage is on these terminals? (DC or AC) so I can check and adjust

    All is good now Al, it was the trimpots MIN/MAX adjustments. I just set them as per manual and now the motor starts and the speed knob controls the speed nicely up/dn
