    Stepper Motor verses Ball Screw Relationships

    Without all the engineering lingo and hype, does anyone know the relationship between a NEMA 23 stepper and diameter size ball screw shaft with 1.8 micro steps and 96" travel? I would think that the stepper in this size runs a ball screw of a diameter of 3/8", but can I go larger diameter shaft? DIY router build.

    I suspect a 96-inch 3/8" ball screw would have a tremendous amount of sagging and whipping.

    I also suspect a NEMA 23 motor would not be nearly enough to move such a large machine, let alone make it cut something.

    If you don't want to dive into "engineering hype", just look at good examples of similar sized machines and copy what they use.

    Even a large Nema 34 may struggle with a 96" ballscrew.
    The proper way to select components, is to first determine the performance goals for the machine, including how fast you want it to accelerate, which is the most important factor.
    You'd then select a screw that can move the machine at the speed you want, while staying within it's critical speed (where it starts whipping). You also need to consider it's column strength, especially when it's really long, and moving a lot of weight.
    Once you have the screw selected, then you find a motor that can spin it at the required speeds.
    Just spinning the screw itself will take a considerable amount of power, due to it's inertia.

    Rack and pinion would be a much better choice for an 8ft router.
