    Microstepping question

    Hi,
Has anyone read the article "Microstepping Myths" at http://www.machinedesign.com/ASP/str...tedArticle.asp

From the article "...The table shows the significant impact of the incremental torque/microstep as a function of the number of microsteps/full step."

Does anyone here using microstepping controllers for their CNC machine see this torque/microstep relationship ?

    Regards, Tim.

    Re: Microstepping question

    Hi Tim,

Yes you will loose some torque, but the benefits from the smoother movements and the reduce resonance problem more than made up for it. We were actually loosing steps with full and half steps due the motor resonating. At a certain resonance frequency torque drops significantly, and this happened to be near the speed we were operating at. With the micro stepping boards, resonance problem were significantly reduced. It was reassuring to know that the motors performed more consistently.

We have no problem with miss steps and have plenty of torque for the milling machine. We use 8 micro steps, but you can use less with our design, even go back to full or half steps. No point in using more than 8 micro steps since the stepper motors don't really resolve much more.
