Weird grinding noise when referencing X axis

I have a new noise that just started happening in my 1100.
When I reference X axis the machine sounds normal but after it touches the X limit switch when it is referencing itself, it makes a grinding/groaning noise as it slowly moves to its reference position. It does seem to reference and I can use the machine. That is the only time it makes that kind of noise. Any ideas what might be going on?
    Thanks

How old is the machine? How many hours of runtime? Have you ever adjusted or re-tightened the gibs on the bed? When did you last pull the oiling handle?

    Hi Jwatte
I bought the machine new in 2013.
I’m not sure how many hours but typically it will get run approximately 5 hours a week.

I’m a compulsive Oiler so that is not an issue.
    I’ve never checked/adjusted the gibs.

Do you think the gibs at the x reference end have gone out of alignment and need adjusting? After messing with moving the black stop ramp, I did get the noise to stop but now it’s back.

I only get this noise (kind of a stall/grinding) at the x reference. I looked at the stepper coupler and I did not see any slippage when this happened)

    Thanks
    Nathan

From what I've read here, checking the gibs would be a good thing to do. They might have worn, if you have 5 hours a week for 5 years on it!

Ok, I’ll start looking at YouTube videos on how to do it. It’s something I knew I would have to learn at some point.
    Thanks

That could be the sound a stalled stepper makes. Try moving the block that activates the limit switch slightly closer to the center of the table.

Good idea. I checked that and there was no slippage.
Weird thing, after running the machine for three hours straight the noise stopped. Maybe the ways were a little dry.

On my machine, the end limit bumper wasn't in the right place... maybe fighting the bumper?

check the plug that plugs into the stepper driver from the stepper motor, mine would make wierd noises occasionally when the plug burned, luckily I caught it in time and it didnt destroy the mosfets in he driver.

    Thanks for all the input.
After lots of fiddling around it turns out that my ‘x’ axis limit switch was bad.
I replaced it and it works great now. FYI I sanded the leads down and used De-Oxit in the leads to help maintain good contact.
