    Advice Needed...

I'm trying to develop cnc aspect (2.5d) for my software application in development.
I use two large retrofitted hermes engravers using Smoothieboards (working great) but would like a device fitted with a non-gerbel based firmware. I need a controller that uses somewhat generic gcode and not reliant on Mach3 etc. Can anyone think of something to provide generic gcode to external stepper drivers that won't cost $3k!
Would also be great with ethernet but if needed usb will do.

    Thanks
