Transverse hole in headstock under sherline spindle

    Hello,

What is the transverse hole underneath the spindle for in the sherline mini lathe please ?

See attached picture. Underneath the headstock locking screw.

Usually in photos it has a silver cap or a black cap plugging the hole.

I have not had my Sherline in years, but I think it’s for a lever that ties the lead screw to the threading gears, comes with the threading kit, which at first glance seem cheesy, but works really well

Is it a through cast hole ?
.... many machines have such holes for slinging so that people don't try to lift the "heavy" end by tying a rope aronnd the headstock.
.... putting a round bar through, a sling on each side plus a sling to the tailstock end gives you a stable 3 point lift.

ahh .... that's why I asked if it was cast...
.. if it is, then, there is no other functional use, other than for manual handling, like threading a rope thru.

It is definitely for the threading attachment. I'm not sure of anything else it is used for
