Hello, we currently have two 5.5hp Perske spindles, both with stripped shafts where the collet nut threads on. Most likely from years of use and thousands of tool changes.

I've been told that these are not worth fixing, or rebuilding. Since a new spindle is around $3000.00, it seems it would be worth looking into.

Has anyone else experience this, or had them rebuilt/rethreaded by a machine shop?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Otherwise, does anyone need two Perske spindles for spare parts. Bearings still seem to be in good shape.

The problem is that those threads are totally trashed. There's no way to rethread them and keep them the same size (short of adding metal with a welder, which would introduce more problems than it solved). So you'd need to grind the spindle end down to flat, and rethread a size smaller. But then you'd have to find a closer nut that fit - good luck...

Not on Spindle, but I've seen threads repaired by machining whats left of the threads off, machining a sleeve to press onto the shaft and welding it in place around the face, machining the face and recutting the thread.
Not sure how it would go with a shaft that small and I would think you would have to disassemble the spindle in order to get it done.

Might be worth a go.

You don't have much to loose except for the cost of the work. Spindle is bust anyway.
