Using same control box for different sized nema motors

    Hi,

Would a control box with Gecko drivers running nema 23 motors be suited to also run nema 14 or 17 motors without needing to calibrate when switching machines?

I am thinking of adding cnc function to a taig lathe but using the same setup as the taig mill.

I'm guessing I would have to match the coil resistance. But is there more to this?

    Thank you!
    Peter

You need to set the current rating on the drives to match the motors.

    Hi Peter

which Gecko driver do you intend to use ?

photos of your existing control box connector & the drivers inside will help

if you have a G540 or individual G251 drivers for example the current is set by a resistor
(1000 ohms per amp upto the 3.5A limit)

by fitting the resistor is in the connector on the motor cable
the current will be correct for which ever machine is connected

have a look at this adaptor to connect a 6 wire Taig motor to a 4 wire G540 driver

    note
the .homanndesigns adaptor shown has a variable resistor on the GC-02 breakout board instead of a fixed resistor

Hi Gerry and John, thanks for your answers.

I am using the G210. The box has an adjust potentiometer on it and also an external current set resistor. I'm guessing the resistor is the limiter and the adjust pot is the fine tuning.

So I could open the adjust pot fully and install resistors in the cable to get the same effect but be machine independent. Is that correct?

    Hi Peter

    the G210 manual should help

    PDF manual
    Attachment 410090

    Attachment 410092

    Attachment 410094

I would expect the potentiometer is more likely to be connected to the splidle speed control

to set the motor current you just need to use the correct resistor value givenin the manual
