Hack a lightscribe into a CNC laser?

    Hey guys,

I was just taking a look at those new lightscribe DVD/CD burners, the ones that use a small laser to burn an image onto a disk. Could the laser in one of those be added onto a CNC router or similar and used to do lightweight engraving sort of work?

The laser is too low in power to engrave anything.
You need about 8 watts to cut paper.

Ahh, I see. Just out of curiosity, what type of laser does it use to engrave the disks? I don't know anything about the process used in lightscribe.

The disks have a special coating and I think the laser is causing a chemical change to the ink embedded in it. I'm not sure of the power of the laser but I would think it is less than half a watt.
