Pulley and Speeds for 2 meter long X axis.

    Greetings guys!

So I'm back, going to work on my X axis which is built on a 2 meter long by 300mm Aluminum I beam. I am waiting on some HTD 5M x 15mm wide belt. I have my mounts for Idler and pulleys to work on. I went with a 12mm shaft (bore) to make sure things are strong. and a Nema 23 3 N.m motor

So here is where I am. What are typical speeds used for the X axis on a large machine like this? This is more non-contact like a plasma, than driving a spindle in Aluminum.

I ask because I'd like to know what tooth count of pulley I should get/make?

Less teeth, I would have more accuracy but less speed. More teeth and I get more speed but lose some torque.

I 3D printed a 30 tooth pulley just to see the size.

    What's more typical.

    Thanks!

Speeds would be very dependent on the specific application. Could be anywhere from 10-100 meters/min, or even faster.

You are kind of trying to work the problem backwards

Normally you start with the needed speed, then factor in the load, desired acceleration, system resolution, and then finally arrive at the motor requirements and the pulley sizes.

At this point, figure out what you can live with for speed and resolution, and gear the system accordingly. You may have to sacrifice some speed for resolution.
