Cant set tools Hyundai HIT 8s 840C

Setting up a new to me Hit 8s. Machine wasnt used for a while but everything seems to be in good working order. I did reload the parameters from the drive before using. Trying to set one turning tool (tool #1) to start with using the toolsetter. Following instructions in the manual and it seems to work (does enter data in the offsets) but the distance in X is off by 1.514" for the turning tool. Z offset is also way off but dont remember by how much. I tried to calibrate the tool eye probe as described in the manual by subtracting 1/2" of the difference between a measured part and the X display value to the X1022 parameter but it doesnt change anything related to the position display, just changes the offset numbers in the measurement tables. I do have the machine key switch set to EDIT COMM, and pretty sure Im doing the procedure correctly. Directly out of the HIt manual.

I also tried setting the tools using the tool offset/WCS calculator but that just generated different numbers in the control that werent seen in the position display in either Jog or MDI after a tool load command. Ive never seen a control that didnt display the offset position numbers when in any mode. Its like they cant be loaded for some reason.

Anyone know the trick to getting the offset correctly set? Or maybe the 840C cant display offsets unless called in a program?

After further head banging I see that if you program a move in MDI, say: T01D01 GO X.850 and make a cut the cut is spot on .850. Same with Z. This is after setting the tool using the tool eye using the same offset settings as the machine came with.

The position display still does not reflect the WCS offset position but:

I was able to go into Setting Data, general data, work coordinate display, it was set to no, you can reset to yes by pressing the select button. That makes the position display change to WCS if you're in MDI and program T01D01 G0 X Z. Still can't figure out if its possible to change the position to WCS in jog mode. Every other machine Ive ever run can switch between the two.

Seems incredibly dangerous to have a machine that can't display the WCS info. Both for using in manual mode and for setup. I guess it would be usable as it is in auto mode but seems like a really poor control implementation. Why would a company like Hyundai do this intentionally? To save few $ on licensing fees? Seems like they would potentially lose more on liability claims.

How are other Hyundai HIT users dealing with this?

I mean really, my 1983 Mori SL1 had changeable screens for MCS and WCS. You have to be pretty cheap to not include that feature. Anyone on this forum actually own/run these HIT lathes? After this I could see why there aren't many out there in use anymore.

Well, I sent an inquiry to Hyundai support and here's the response:

    "Hello Mark
I got your information from the team at Hyundai Wia.
I have attached the response I received from the Service team at Hyundai.

Siemens 840C control is designed that way. There’s no way you can switch to WCS with Jog mode."

I guess that settles it, hyundai decided to be different from every other machine builder and not allow the machine to be used in JOG mode for anything useful. Oh well, should have asked them before I moved it into the shop. At least it was cheap. Hyundai HIT buyers beware!

I have Hyundai lathes with Siemens 840D control and have never ran the 840C control. On 840D, there is a button that togles back and forth between MCS and WCS. Have you tried pausing the program and switching to "JOG". on the 840D,this keeps the spindle turning and stays in WCS.
Not sure 840C supports this but thought I would toss it out there.

Yeah, I have an 840D on my DMC103V mill, this is ancient history compared to that one. I did try switching out of auto to jog but that only works if you're in a program, if you leave the program the WCS switches back to MCS. I like to have WCS in jog to touch up parts in collet chucks or setting up parts to check clearances.

I see that's its possible to switch between the "standard" interface and the Hyundai dumbed down one, Im wondering if its possible to change parameter 5001.01 when you're in standard? That parameter is supposed to enable WCS on regular 840C controls. The 840C on the Hyundai is missing/hiding that parameter entry.

I used this procedure below to switch out of Hyundai mode into standard interface to initialize my serial port. Ive got 4.8 OS. Scared to change anything else in standard and have the machine hang. If anyone has succeeded in changing the behavior of WCS by resetting it in standard please let me know.
