    What spindle are you using

I am trying to figure out what spindles are the most popular in the DIY world.
I know a lot use a router and a lot use Chinese spindles and VFD's but I am trying to figure out the specific spindles that you are all using.
In the 2.2kw genre, where did you get yours? How much did you pay and are you happy with it and any service/support you received?
    Same for the VFD.
    Thanks

Rattm Motors offers a 2.2kw Spindle that is a bit longer than the other 2.2kw Spindles around and has more Torque. Together with the Nowforever VFD which has some kind of simplified vector control, this setup will work even at lower speeds.

As you can see in this Video the VFD powers the spindle even at lower speed.

    Is pin 4 internally grounded?

Pin 4 is usually never grounded. You can ground the spindle in many ways using a separate ground wire ran from the main ground in your VFD box.

Would it not be easiest to connect pin 4 to the inside of the cap and use a 4 wire cable to bring ground back to the VFD?

The 4 wire cable is shielded and also has a ground wire and goes back to the VFD enclosure. Pin 4 inside the cap goes no place and on mine its mounted on plastic. If you take the motor apart you more than likely will void any warranty it had. The ground wire can be attached to the metal housing of the motor in many ways. My motor mount is aluminum and the ground wire is attached to it. Since the Z moves up and down and left to right on the gantry, the bearings can not be relied on as a good ground. The ground wire needs to be electrically connected to the metal housing of the spindle motor.

Re: What spindle are you using

Wondering whether many people have considered using a Taig spindle on their DIY routers? I found one example here https://www.cnczone.com/forums/diy-c...tml#post869032 , and it seems like a interesting idea if you're looking for a 'router' that handles aluminum reasonably well. If I'm reading the Taig price list right, the stock spindle/motor from the mill is under $200, and you can probably do a variable speed DC servo setup (e.g consul) for under $250.

    Hi,
I use this (HFS-6508-AC) spindle from a German manufacturer, quite a bit more expensive than the Chinese ones but great quality.
This same company makes way bigger and better spindles as well but out of my price league.

Re: What spindle are you using

    Hi,
good question, I've had it for about five years.

I seem to recall that the price was about 360 Euro. I bought a few other bits as well. The shipping was expensive, the company insisted on DHL.
The shipping alone (to New Zealand) was 290 Euro.

Overall I estimate the cost was about double what I would have paid for a competing Chinese spindle.

I have used this spindle for many hundreds or possibly thousands of hours....it goes great. To me it doesn't matter what it cost me, I have had value
    from it.

I really wanted a spindle to cut steel and this little unit just doesn't have the torque. I enquired from the same company about their bigger (4 pole pair, 8Nm)
manual change spindle, about 2200 Euro.....not cheap. This company supplies industrial customers, the little spindle I bought, their cheapest, is the closest
they come to the hobby market.

As I say the quality is what I wanted and I got it but at a cost but am vet satisfied. Whether others would consider it value is questionable.

I don't care what it costs within reason, but Chinese quality is questionable. How many Hp or kW, does it go to 24,000 rpm and air or water cooled. I really do not to mess with water. Thanks.

It looks to be about 1Hp, not enough power for what I do.

Re: What spindle are you using

    Hi,
    yes my spindle is 800W.

At the time I bought mine they used to list a price and you could buy online. They seem in recent times gone away from that idea. I have contacted them via
    email without difficulty.

I recommend you check out their website.

The do a 'HFS Standard Series', of which mine is the smallest and cheapest aircooled example. They do four aircooled models up to 2.2kW.
They do another six models from the HFS series from 800W up to 4.5kW water cooled.

Thereafter you are into their "HFP Professional Series". There are a bewildering choice of spindles, for example a 1.2 kW water cooled manual change spindle of 70,000 rpm!
The one is was interested in was their HFP-D-8015-12 which is a 230V two pole pair per phase spindle up to 12000 rpm but useful low speed torque, 2.5 Nm.
There are many others including tool changers etc.

The majority of their range could not be called hobby grade....it a bit too expensive for that.
