    advice on 570oz steppers?

im looking at swapping the drivers, motors and psu on my torchmate 2 table. looking to gain a little acceleration for thinner material, cant cut over 150ipm without losing steps

im between buying name brand and cheaper ebay/amazon stuff. this one

current setup is applied motion 2035 drivers and small nema 23 motors ( guessing less than 100oz)

someone mentioned gecko drivers and quality motors, but i can seem to find a motor in the 400-600oz range that will work with the 3.5amp gecko drivers.

so instead im looking at these from automationparts, even though im sure there only 3/4 or less the rated power.

    thanks as always!

That is the e-bay store for Automation Technologies, Inc. I have those exact stepper motors on my CNC milling machine but using different drivers and they are great. That kit is good, but t I would opt for the KL-5056E digital DSP drivers instead of the "standard" KL-5056 drives. The DSP based drives will be smoother and perform a bit better than the standard drives.

    Re: advice on 570oz steppers?

    Hi,
the real trick to getting your machine to go fast is low inductance steppers.

Some quite powerful, that is to say high torque, steppers get that high torque but only at the expense of high inductance.
The higher the inductance the longer the current takes to build up in the coils of the motor. That in turn limits how fast the stepper
    will go.

This means that sometimes a smaller, say 400oz, motor might do better overall than a larger 600oz motor because the larger motor
has high inductance. Sure the 600oz motor is more powerful at low speed but above 500 rpm the 400oz motor is more powerful.

The classic means of increasing the maximum operating speed of a stepper is to use a higher driving voltage, the higher the
voltage the sooner the current builds up in the coils. Thus the steppers drivers you should look for is less about current but they
should have the highest allowable input voltage.

Leadshine AM882's have a fair reputation. They can handle 80V input, the best in class. They can output up to 8.2A or any lesser
(programmable) current you desire. They are about $65-$85 USD on Ebay.

Take a closer look at the specifications for inductance, not all manufacturers make it plain but that's what discerning buyers look for.

actually i posted the wrong link, i was actually looking at the 6050 drivers, maybe i should look at the digital drivers too. my goal it to reconnect everything to the torchmate break out so i need to be careful.

    Hi
those Toshiba 6050 driver ICs are very prone to blowing up. You can do better with your money.

    Re: advice on 570oz steppers?

Ignore what joeaverage is saying. The 570 oz in motors you are looking at ARE low inductance motors, and the 6050 drivers, as In KL-6050, have nothing to do with toshiba driver chips. The kl driver nomenclature just means it is a 60v 5.0a drive. The toshiba chips used in cheap stepper drives are 6560 and 6600, NOT 6050

The drives I have on my machine are kl-6050s and I would still get the kl5056E. All of the drives we are talking about will hook up the same, so that shouldn't be a concern.

A smaller 380 oz motor may have more torque than the 570 at higher speeds, which is what you want. Check the torque curves.

I doubt that the 380 oz-in 2.8mH motor will have better high speed performance than the 570 oz-in 2.2 mH motor. The motor inductance is the biggest driver in the torque drop at speed.

Make sure you get the 5A version of the 570 oz-in motor as this is the one with 2.2mH inductance.

The 570oz motor only has 100oz of torque at 550rpm. The 381oz motor has 140oz of torque at 550RPM.

    According to their torque curves.

I'd run them at 60V, to get a little more speed out of them.

    Re: advice on 570oz steppers?

I've seen that 570 torque curve and I don't believe it. Here is why:

As I said, I have the 570 5a motors reflected in that torque curve on my G0704. I also have these 425 oz-in motors on a XY table running the same ballscrews (Thompson 0.2" pitch with square Thompson ballnuts) as the G0704, except that the XY table is 1/2 the size and probably 1/3 the weight of the G0704 table. The G0704 also has double ball nuts spring loaded that will produce more rotational drag. Both are running at 48V, set for max current, and 1/8 microstepping and irect drive of the ballscrews. I cannot achieve anywhere near the rapid traverse rates with the XY table that I can with the G0704. I can rapid the G0704 at 180 IPM, and can only get 120 IPM on the XY table. 180 ipm =900rpm and 120 ipm = 600 rpm. Both of these tests were performed with "loose" and lubricated gibs.

Looking at the torque curve for the 425, it should have more torque above 450 rpm than the 570. I can guarantee you that the 425 does not have as good high speed performance as the 570 even though the torque curves say it should. If it did, my XY table would be zipping around just as fast or faster than my G0704 and it isn't. At 600 rpm the torque curves show that the 425 should have twice the torque of the 570 and this is the rpm where the 425 stalls. So, one or the other torque curve is wrong, and I'm betting that it is the 570 torque curve that you linked.

    Hi 109jb,

    My apologies, my mistake.

The 570 oz in motors you are looking at ARE low inductance motors
They are in fact 2.5mH motors(see attached), which is not bad but not great either. Other manufacturers offer lower inductance motors, I have attached
a spec from a Leadshine 23 size stepper of somewhat lower (439oz) holding torque but half the inductance.
