    Question Z Plate/Mount Length

For my home build I'm planning on 8" of travel. I was planing on using a 1/2" aluminum plate for the moving part of the Z Axis, mounted to 4 HWIN 15mm bearing blocks. So the router bit to the first being block pair is about 8.5"

How narrow, width of plate without a gusset, can I get away with assuming nothing more than a 1/2 "deep cut in plywood or MDF?

The width will not have as big of an impact as a change in thickness.

You didn’t mention anything else about the machine so one would be guessing. However when considering this plate the important thing is to make sure it is wide enough to mount the router / spindle. Balance this with the fact that excessive width impacts machine capacity.

When I built mine, I put the rails on the moving part and the blocks on the stationary part so there is more support and rigidity when the spindle is at the top of travel.

Do you have any issue with sawdust buildup on the bearing rails?
