Help Identifying A "Thing" on the second shaft of a motor. NOT an ENCODER....

OK, so I have a BUNCH of these things and until I saw a motor with one on it I had no idea how they are used or what they are even though I have manufacturer and part numbers on the boxes.
WHICH I just realized I don't have with me. Will add that info later....
In any case, maybe someone knows what they are just by looking so check out the pic I'm interested in the big silver thing on the other end where an encoder might go....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If its allowed here, don't know why it wouldn't be.... The first person to correctly identify the thing can have a couple of them. If you are out of the continental US you'll have to arrange some shipping though....
    Thanks,

Some type of damper, or maybe a flywheel?

I believe it IS a damper. It's a Slo-Syn by name. I took one apart there is a large solid steel wheel that fills the entire case and it is drenched in oil. They mount on a 1/4" shaft and if I spin the shaft up in the drill chuck of my "name brand very expensive lithium ion cordless drill that I shall not name here" that has a weird problem with stopping and throwing Sparks..... The Chuck stops but there isn't the normal herky jerky crashing sound and it feels much more comfortable in my hand.....
So I'll do a Google search to find out how we used to used them as I don't see them being used anywhere I assume they are unnecessary or obsolete.
But if anyone knows of something fun to do with them I have what I would refer to as a metric buttload of them.
With all that said you win the door prize! Would you like me to send you a couple to play with?
Send me an email at cntmleveck at gmail dot you know....
    And thanks,

If the motor is a stepper, it is most likely a Lanchester (sp) damper.

You might want to try running the motors with and without them.
Modern drives do run smoother, and may negate the need for dampers, but they may give you smoother, quieter movement.

I'm using DIY dampers on my current machine. I'll shoot you an email later. Thanks.
