    VFD or Spindle problems

    I am new to the site and also new VFDs. I built a copy router which is manually operated. My son who works at a place with many CNC routers and mills, insisted that I use a VFD and spindle motor instead of a trim router. I agreed and purchased a 1.5kw spindle and Chinese VFD from Ebay. After doing all the modifications to my design, I got everything together and it ran great. Until now. I started to get The E.ol error and the motor would stop. It was intermittent at first and I blamed the extension cord that I started using. I eliminated the extension cord and it seemed ok. Note that this is a 220V unit. I checked out the cord and it seems fine. Now I am getting the E.ol and E.oc errors. I come to this site and decided to to check my programming. That is when I really screwed things up. I finally got things to run (statically) but here is the max output. I haven’t tried to use the router, just ran it in place for a few minutes. I am going to check my line voltage next because it seems high with my cheap HF multimeter (~260-270V at the outlet). This may be the multimeter. I have used this router occasionally for almost a year with no problems to speak of. The seller on ebay gave me special parameters, which I have seemed to misplace.

    Please note that before I fooled with the programming I had total control from 0-24K RPM.
    Also, The error message seemed to have a 5 or S as the the last digit.

    Here are the various errors that randomly shut me down.

    I advise not to run it until you have it programed and the wiring checked it looks more than one problem that you have how have you wired the input power post a photo

    Re: VFD or Spindle problems

    The wiring is correct as I have been running without a problem for about a year. I started getting the overload error intermittently when using the duplicator. I first thought that I was taking too late of cuts. As I said this is manually operated soI started taking shallower cuts. It then started giving me the overload error while free running and not cutting. I have never had the spindle get hot and when it did error I was able to just restart it and it would run for a while before stopping.I should not have tried to go through the programming. I have to get my voltage checked using another meter to see if my meter is accurate. If it is, my line voltage is too high.

    It has nothing to do with how long it has been running, it can still be wired incorrect and still run it can take that long for a VFD or spindle to say enough of this I'm not going to work anymore you won't be the first one or the last for this to happen

    Your line voltage will be fine no matter what it is, as long as the voltage is not to low, you can only check the input voltage, do not try to check the output voltage with a regular meter or you can damage the IBGT's and your meter

    What Parameters do you have set or changed ???

    Re: VFD or Spindle problems

    After setting PD013 to 8 (factory default), I set the following to my original settings as supplied by the seller.

    PD002 =1
    PD005, 004, 003 = 400
    PD072 = 400
    PD070 = 1
    PD144 = 3000
    I checked wiring and it is correct for 220v. Everything is wired with #16 gauge wire.

    VFD controls function correctly now but motor still faults.

    You need more settings than that to have one of these spindles run correctly they are some of the main basic settings and not enough to make it run safely

    Have you checked the 4th pin at the spindle to see if it is Grounded to the spindle body, if it is not then this has to be corrected before moving forward

    What is in the Email last post regarding the wiring is not correct the input power should be connected to R and T Terminals and Ground to the Ground terminal

    I was really hoping you would respond to my post. Most of everything of any value that I read has been by you.

    Is your spindle air cooled or water cooled

    Air Cooled. I will get to shop today and get those pictures. I am quite sure pin 4 isn’t grounded to spindle body though. It may not be used at all.

    Pics attached.

    1 - input wiring R,T and earth ground
    2- disassembled connector and ran Pin 4 to body of spindle motor Should it also be grounded to VFD? Would be an easy fix since there is a wire running to VFD IN CABLE.
    3 - picture of my set-up
