    squeaky chinese spindle.

    Hi, I am just powering up the spindle for the first time on my self-designed CNC milling machine.

    I bought a 2kW water-cooled, chinese VFS and spindle. I have a provisional clamping and water cct filled but not pumping.

    I ran up for about 20s to 50Hz max ( 3000 rpm ) , just enough time to attain control speed and power off again. On stopping I notice a dry squeaky noise. I suspected my clamping maybe distorting the body so slackened right off. Still there.

    These have pretty low runout spec and ( allegedly ) german bearings, so fairly tight.

    I wondered if anyone with experience of these spindles can tell me whether it is normal and well run-in , or if I have a problem.

    I did a quick video of a quick stop/start. The squeak is heard at beginning and end.

    TIA.

    BTW Firefox internal player seems not to produce the audio. Save and view with VLC or similar if that happens

    If this is a 400 Hz spindle running of a VFD, running it at less than 100 Hz is going to risk burning it out. Chinese spindle, sounds like you have issues with the bearings.... sent it back!!

    I don't think that's squeaking. Run it at 10,000 and see what it sounds like.
    What's the carrier frequency set to?

    @wmgeorge:
    sorry, looking back what I wrote was incorrect. 50Hz was the minimum starting freq. , it stabilised at 400Hz.

    Thanks Gerry, I'll check tomorrow. The workshop is shut now.

    It seems perfectly free and smooth in both directions when I spin it by hand, no noise. I may need to increase the minimum speed too. After a quick perusal, I more or less kept the defaults of the VFD ( supplied with the motor ) just to test it powered on. I need to wire the pump up before I run it longer.
