Nothing new, manufacturing has been using VFD's on standard 3 phase motors for years, the commercial HVAC/R industry also on air handing units for fan speed control same thing. Heck I was retrofitting units 30 years ago. All the wiring was in metal conduit, controls usually with 4-20 ma or 0-10 vdc. Big energy savings on VAV box systems.

I to have been using VFD's since the late 80's, all were standard AC motors also there was no 'VFD' cable out there then.
The earliest motor fitted was on a 1954 machine retro fit 30' bed planer.

Al I can not remember the first one we put in, but yes no special motors no special cable and we ran all the power wiring in conduit as you did also the flexible motor end was Sealtite with the added grounding strap inside. We knew enough to use shielded wires for the control feed outside the enclosure. Shielding soldered and crimped, The old motors with lots of copper and steel worked great on those VFD's.
