    BUT sounds good. My misunderstanding was that those with a lan connection were controlled over a literal network. If plugged direct to laptop does one need a crossover cable?

    Any network cable will do, both direct or crossed, the ethernet cable is just the way of communication like your current LPT but faster. I use Mach3+ESS for 5 years now and never had a problem.

    Be careful with that. Older network interfaces with RJ45 connectors may not auto-detect a cross-over cable properly. Cheaper cables may not have enough wires or be incorrectly wired. If the connection is directly between two NIC cards, this can be frustrating.

    It's also a trap sometimes with USB cables that are data or power only versus data and power and wondering why you can't transfer data between a PC and/or charge a mobile phone.

    If you have a laptop that is from era of Methusalem, then you might be out of luck that it has autodetect possibility.

    Any decent laptop will autodetect the cable type.

    BTW Bentley is overkill for short hops, better try Yugo
