    Question Power Supply Size?

    Hi,

I just got new stepper motors for my DIY router and I'm a little confused how large the power supply has to be. I'm planning on getting a 36V power supply.
How many amps should i get in case all 4 motors are at full load? I can't find an explanation how to roughly calculate the power draw of stepper motors.

    I have 4 motors (2x on the X axis)

And these are the stepper drivers.

    Thanks!

Normally if you get these similar type 4 axis kits from China you're given 2 psu's to these specs:

    (1 supply per 2 motors/drivers).

You can run these nema 23 kits on 48v supplies if wanted as well.

    Re: Power Supply Size?

To calculate current requirements for a stepper motor multiply the motors rated current by 2/3.

So, you’re motor is rated at 4.2A. Multiplying it by 2/3 gives 2.8A per motor.

    If you plan to use 3 motors that’s a total of 8.4A. For 4 motors that’s 11.2A

    Cheers

    You could use a single 48v 12A supply such as;

Depends on the budget as well. The Meanwell are nice but for half the cost you can buy 2 of these:
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AC-110V-2...AM6BF6r8RrwhVg
Import the Chinese 48v 7.2A 360w version for £21.00 each. Spot on, and I bet they'll put it down on the customs form as a $10 cost!!

if you use this from Geckodrive.com's web site to select your supply voltage

    see
    https://www.geckodrive.com/support/s...ly-basics.html

    32 * ?L = VMAX

with your stepper motor with an inductance of 3,8mH

    your looking for a supply voltage of 32 * 1.95 = VMAX = 62V

to avoid limiting the maximum speed you can step the motor

that requires a more expensive stepper driver

if you can find a stepper motor closer to 2.6mH to 2.8mH then a 48V supply will be OK

This is when seeing some of these Chinese sellers flogging 23 sized motors with an inductance of 6.6mH and above leaves me scratching my head!?
